When an LED TV displays no standby light and appears completely dead, most technicians immediately suspect the main power supply section, the primary MOSFET, or a short circuit in the 12V rail. However, in many China 40-inch LED TVs using combination mainboards, a shorted backlight driver section can completely shut down the Power Supply Unit (PSU) due to internal over-current protection mechanisms.

The Initial Problem & Symptoms

The customer brought in a 40-inch China LED TV with a common complaint: the television was completely dead, and the red standby indicator light failed to turn on when plugged into the wall outlet.

At first glance, this symptom usually points toward three common failures:

  1. Blown primary fuse or bridge rectifier.

  2. Faulty primary switching MOSFET or PWM controller IC.

  3. Shorted secondary output diodes (12V or 24V lines) dragging the power supply down to 0V.

Step-by-Step Primary Power Supply Testing

Before jumping to conclusions or unsoldering surface-mount components (SMD), a systematic testing protocol was followed using a digital multimeter in DC Voltage and Continuity mode.

  • AC Fuse: Inspected and tested for continuity. The fuse was completely intact, ruling out a major primary dead short.

  • Main Filter Capacitor: Measured approximately 300V DC across the primary electrolytic capacitor, confirming the AC-to-DC conversion stage was fully functional.

2. Secondary Side Measurements

Despite the primary side working properly, checking the secondary winding diodes revealed 0 Volts on the 12V rail and 0 Volts on the 27V/45V backlight supply rail.

Usually, when the primary side has 300V DC but the secondary side output is 0V, the SMPS controller IC enters hiccup/protection mode because one of the secondary voltage output lines is shorted directly to ground.

Isolating the Fault: 12V Short vs. Backlight Driver Short

Instead of randomly heating or replacing SMD capacitors on the main motherboard, the secondary rectifier diode feeding the backlight driver circuit was isolated.

  4. Pressing the power button on the remote turned the TV ON, confirming the main processor, 12V system, and RAM were 100% healthy.

This test conclusively proved that the main 12V rail was not shorted. Instead, the onboard backlight driver circuit’s switching MOSFET (or high-voltage boost diode) was shorted directly to ground, triggering the power supply protection system.

  4. Connect On/Off Signal (ENA/BL_ON): Connect the ENA or ON/OFF pin of the driver board to the motherboard’s BL_ON (Backlight Enable) signal line (usually 3.3V when TV is ON).

  5. Connect LED Strips Output: Plug the internal LED backlight strip harness directly into the output terminal of the new driver board.

Once installed, the TV powered on with perfect brightness, stable voltage output, and no overheating on the primary SMPS section.
